Plummets: "Plummets were commonly used to divine the location of a lost object or person. A plummet was a small lump of red ocher or some other earth held between the thumb and index finger of the right hand. The left hand was held, with fingers extended, in front of the right. A formula would be uttered, and in time the plummet would begin to swing, and the direction in which it swung most strongly would be the direction in which to search. They would then proceed in this direction for some distance, and if the thing or person was not found, another reading was taken with the plummet and they set out in another direction." The Cherokee method is to hold a pendulum (plummet) in one hand and point with the finger using the other hand. Traditionally, the Cherokee's right hand held a red ocher pendulum, the index finger (or fingers) of the left hand were used to point. Normally, I will map dowse holding a pendulum with my left hand. If locating something using the Cherokee dowsing method, for me it works the same way (left hand points, right hand holds a pendulum).
